Sharing Information with Bec.B Designs

Why you should not send sensitive information via email.

Your first instinct may be to send passwords or other sensitive information to us via email. It is simple, easy and secure right?

Here are several reasons why this practice is risky:

Unencrypted Transmission

Emails are often sent in plain text, meaning the content is unencrypted. If intercepted, it’s easy for someone to extract your password.

Multiple Storage Points

Emails are stored on several systems or servers on their way to you, including:
> The sender’s email account
> Your email server
> Any intermediate servers
If any of these systems are compromised, hackers can access your password.

Local Storage

Emails are often stored locally on your laptop or workstation in plain text. If your device is lost or stolen, criminals can easily access your passwords.

Persistent Copies

Even deleting emails doesn’t ensure they’re gone forever. They can remain in trash folders or backups, making them accessible to attackers.

Email Account Vulnerability

If your email account is hacked, attackers can gain access to all the passwords you’ve sent/received in your email history.

Phishing Risks

Emails are susceptible to phishing attacks. If a hacker gains access to your email through phishing, they can access any sensitive information you’ve shared.

Compliance Issues

Many organisations have policies against sharing sensitive information like passwords via email due to regulatory compliance and data protection laws. Ignoring these policies can lead to serious legal consequences.

By understanding these risks, it’s clear that sharing passwords via email is a practice to avoid.

The following video explains 5 alternative ways to share sensitive information with Bec.B Designs. Click on the square at the bottom right of the video to make it full screen. You can press the Esc button to exit full screen when you have finished. Underneath the video, you will find the links to the solutions I discuss in the video.
